On March 20th community groups, political leaders, and regular folks around the world are called upon by the United Nations to celebrate International Day of Happiness – a day dedicated to recognizing the importance of happiness and well-being in our lives. Sometimes the first step in making others happy is to learn how to be happier ourselves. Here are some of the GREAT suggestions from “10 Keys to Happier Living” that you can use to increase your own happiness and became an agent for positive change in the world.
Giving: Doing something nice for someone else makes him or her happier AND makes the giver happier, too. It’s a happiness win-win!
Relating: Connecting with others makes us happier. Whether it’s friends, family, animals, or strangers – reaching out in a small (or big) way reminds us that we are all related, and that connection to others increases our feeling of well-being and happiness.
Exercising: Get up and move it! Our human bodies are designed to move, so when we exercise our bodies reward us with a happier mood. Spending time outdoors is ideal, but getting your groove on indoors is a great happiness booster, too.
Awareness: You’ll appreciate the world more if you pay attention to the details that are there all around us. Enticing smells, sounds, flavors, and visual treats are waiting patiently nearby; you’ll feel happier when you make the choice to actively notice them.
Trying Out: Humans are drawn to learning – it’s in our nature. Trying something new, like a brand new activity or just a new twist on an old favorite, awakens our brains and makes us feel happier.
