Ogden Nash famously wrote that “The dog is man’s best friend,” and many people agree. Dogs are loyal to their human pals, protective of them (often loudly), and are happy to hang out with you -- on a walk around the block, sprawled out next to the couch, or bounding along on a mountainous hike. So are those the qualities of a “best friend” -- loyal, protective, and good company?
National Best Friend Day is June 7th this year, so it seems like a good time to really think about our nearest and dearest friends (dog, human, or other) and just what makes them so special.
“Lots of people want to ride with you in the limo, but what you want is someone who will ride the bus with you when the limo breaks down,” Oprah Winfrey advised.
“A true friend is someone who thinks that you are a good egg, even though he knows that you are slightly cracked,” said radio host Bernard Meltzer.
Maybe it’s simpler for you – perhaps your best friend is just genuinely funny and actually ‘gets you.’ Or maybe your best friend is the one person you can’t wait to share your good news with because sharing it with her is what makes it real.
Whoever the special friends are in your life -- for whatever reasons – sending them a tin of gourmet popcorn for National Best Friend Day is a fun way to keep in touch. (And if your best friend is your dog, you can just eat all the popcorn, because he’s your dog and he loves you and he’ll be happy just knowing that you’re safe and nearby.)
