Tasty Tips for a Plant-Based Diet

Tasty Tips for a Plant-Based Diet

If your New Year's Resolution is to eat healthier ...

you might be thinking of making the switch to a plant-based diet.

What is a P-B D?

When you follow a plant-based diet it means you'll be choosing non-meat food for the majority of your meals – relying more on recipes that feature vegetables, fruits, whole grains, beans, nuts, or seeds.

  • A plant-based diet is slightly different than a vegetarian or vegan diet because you might still choose to use animal-derived supplements like fish oil or even eat small amounts of meat occasionally. But the vast majority of your food and snacks will only include plant ingredients.

What meals can I eat on a Plant-Based Diet?

There are SO many delicious plant-based food options!

  • In fact, many of the foods that you already eat fit the category: spaghetti with marinara sauce … yogurt with fresh fruit and nuts … chana masala … stir fried veggies … red beans & rice! Any vegetarian recipe site or cookbook will have tons of tasty options to try.
  • For restaurant dining -- think Indian, Chinese, or Italian for your go-to’s (just ask them to leave out the meat.)

Plant-based Snacks

The snack world is teeming with tasty plant-based options. Of course, not every plant-based snack qualifies as “healthy” – deep-fried twinkies don’t contain meat, but you definitely can’t include them in your list of better-for-you snack options. If your goal is to eat healthier, try these:

  • Smoothies – blend fresh or frozen fruit with a carrot and some juice. We like to add a dash of cinnamon, too.

Popcorn – high in fiber and satisfyingly crunchy – choose your flavor to match your plant-based snack mood: cheesy, spicy, or even lightly sweet.

  • For an awesome, better-for-you snack try Simple Pop. Made with just 3 ingredients (corn kernels, corn oil, and salt), Simple Pop is only 45 calories per cup!
  • Sweet potato fries – toss slices with a bit of olive oil and salt, then bake until they’re just starting to brown.
  • Hummus with chips or veggie sticks – a great protein snack, we love our hummus with lots of garlic and lemon!

Blended, baked, sautéed, raw, or popped -- plant-based snacks and meals can be colorful, satisfying, and downright delicious!
